Both males and females experienced significant and directionally similar changes in fuel selection after consuming CHO during exercise. These functions together to keep normal glucose levels when glucose availability is high and to keep CHO oxidation going when muscle glycogen stores are depleted during exercise. Based on the current evidence, it can be concluded that males and females have basically identical metabolic reactions to CHO supplementation and can benefit similarly from it during extended exercise. But this only covers training and race nutrition. Daily nutrition and carb loading for male and female athletes is a completely different story. More to come!!!!
